About Koyasan
Koyasan is a highland valley running 6km east to west, and 3km north to south, surrounded by 1000-meter-high mountains and is located in the Kansai region of Wakayama prefecture.
This holy site was granted to Kobo Daishi (Kukai) by the emperor in 816 for use as a center for Shingon Buddhist training. Koyasan is a religious town centered around the monastic complex known as “Danjo Garan.”
A focal point of spiritual belief in Koyasan, “Okunoin” is a holy land where Kobo-Daishi (Kukai) continues on in contemplation to this day. Along the 2km road from Ichinohashi bridge to the Gobyo-bashi bridge, over 200,000 grave stones and memorials of various historical figures, including samural lords, have stood among the cedar trees for a thousand years.
