The 49-meter high pagoda was originally constructed during the 9th. Considered the first of its kind, its unique two-storied design is known as “tahoto.” The present structure is a 1937 reconstruction. Inside is housed a 3-dimensional representation of the mandalas of Shingon Buddhism.
